5 Day Volcano Hiking, Gorillas, and Golden Monkey Trekking in Mgahinga
Our 5 Day Volcano Hiking, Gorillas and Golden Monkey Trekking in Mgahinga is a Special Safari Managed to cover only Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for its Mountain Gorillas, Golden Monkeys, and hiking Mount Sabinyo or the Gorge.
Day 1: Travel to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
After an early morning breakfast, head off westwards to Kisoro, making a stop at the equator for photography and experiments. After that, proceed through Mbarara and Kabale, the Switzerland of Uganda, enjoying views of beautiful, green, rolling hills and numerous islands surrounded by them.
Upon arrival in Kisoro, watch for the views of the three mountains standing side by side. Check into your Hotel, where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Day 2: Golden Monkey Tracking and Relax at Lake Mutanda
In the morning, Head straight to the Park offices for a briefing, then go golden monkey trekking for 3-4 hours. This venture is unique: you will walk through three distinct vegetation zones in the forest to reach the bamboo zone, home to the golden monkeys.
In this journey, you will encounter many bird and butterfly species as well as elephants and buffalo if you’re lucky enough. After, Head off for lunch at Kisoro town, and later head off to Lake Mutanda canoeing on the lake, enjoying spectacular views as you take pictures as well.
Day 3: Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking Experience
Wake up at 6:00 am for breakfast, then go gorilla trekking. This activity involves a nature walk in the forest, with machete-cut paths that make it easy to access the rare mountain gorillas found only in the Virunga region of Africa.
While having the nature walk, prepare for a three-hour hike filled with many bird and butterfly species, beautiful scenery, and unique plant species and spend an hour with the primates, taking pictures and learning more about them.
Later on, return, have lunch, and either have a relaxed evening at your Hotel or visit the communities surrounding the Park to learn more about their way of life, how they coexist with the wild, farming practices, economic activities, and anything else they have to offer.
Day 4: Mount Volcano Hiking or a Gorge Nature Walk
Hike one of the 3 volcanoes, Sabinyo, which is 3,669m; Mt. Gahinga, which is 3,474m; and finally Mt. Muhavura, with its highest peak at 4,127m, a third mountain gifted with a crater lake at the top, which takes about 8 hours.
Look out for butterflies, endemic bird species, various vegetation, golden monkeys, buffalo, and elephants. You will have lunch at one of the rest houses while hiking, then proceed. Upon return, you will have dinner and rest at your Hotel.
Day 5: Return to Kampala
Return to Kampala after breakfast, with a stop at the equator again, if you want to pass through the beautiful Kigezi highlands and stop at various points for photography and scenic views. You will have lunch en route in Mbarara.
