Gorilla Trekking with Uganda Travel Safaris
Gorilla trekking is a bucket-list wildlife adventure that takes you deep into the rainforests of East and Central Africa to observe endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Only three countries—Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)—allow this highly regulated activity.
Gorilla Trekking is a premier wildlife experience, allowing visitors to hike through central African rainforests to spend one hour with endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Primarily taking place in Uganda (Bwindi/Mgahinga) and Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park), it requires a permit, offers close-up viewing of habituated families, and is best during the dry season (June–September).
Where to Go for Gorilla Trekking
- Uganda: Home to half the world’s mountain gorilla population. Trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Budget-conscious travellers often favour Uganda because the country offers permits at a significantly lower price than Rwanda.
- Rwanda: Offers the most accessible experience, with Volcanoes National Park located only about a three-hour drive from Kigali. Furthermore, Rwanda earns its reputation through its high-end luxury lodges and well-maintained infrastructure.
- Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC): The only place where you can see both mountain gorillas (in Virunga National Park) and eastern lowland gorillas (in Kahuzi-Biega National Park). While it offers the most affordable permits, the region can be subject to security-related closures.
Essential Gorilla Trekking Trip Planning (2025-2026)
While Rwanda sets the permit cost at $1,500, travellers typically find the best viewing conditions during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February. Furthermore, authorities enforce a daily limit of eight people per gorilla group for a one-hour session.
To participate, visitors must be at least 15 years old. Consequently, experts strongly recommend booking 6–12 months in advance through official authorities or licensed tour operators such as Wild Travel Safaris or Uganda Travel Safaris.
The Gorilla Trekking Experience
- Preparation: You should be in decent physical shape, as treks can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 7 hours through steep, muddy, and dense terrain.
- What to Pack: Sturdy hiking boots, long-sleeved shirts, long trousers (to protect against nettles), gardening gloves (for grip), a rain jacket, and plenty of water.
- Health Rules: To protect the gorillas from human diseases, authorities prohibit visitors with colds or flu from trekking. Additionally, authorities currently require visitors to wear masks during the encounter to protect the gorillas‘ health.
- Porters: Local porters are available for hire (approx. $15–$20) to carry your gear and assist on difficult slopes, thereby supporting the local community.
For a more immersive experience, Uganda offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience ($1,500), allowing you to spend up to 4 hours with a gorilla family as it undergoes habituation.
