The 9 Days Rwenzori Mountain trek takes you deep into the legendary Mountains of the Moon. Along the way, enjoy the mystical alpine landscapes en route to the Margherita peak (5109m), Africa’s 5th-highest and Uganda’s highest point. You will meet your guide at the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountain to prepare for the ascent, and also receive a briefing about your journey to the peak.

9 Days Rwenzori Mountain trek

Day 1: Transfer to Rwenzori Mountain National Park

Upon arrival, meet your guide and drive to Kasese, a town, while enjoying Uganda’s beautiful scenery along the way. With your guide’s help, settle in as you prepare for your adventure—dinner and overnight at your Lodge.

Day 2: Nyakalengija – Nyabitaba Hut (2650M ASL)

After an early breakfast and a briefing from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, your trek begins on the Nyakalengija trail at about 1600m. Before climbing into the podocarpus forest, for bird lovers, it’s the perfect spot for the Rwenzori turaco, watch for blue and colobus monkeys, and possibly forest elephants.—Dinner and overnight at Nyabitaba hut.

Day 3: Nyabitaba Hut – John Matte Hut (3505M ASL)

Early in the morning, descend from Nyabitaba Hut through the dense forest toward the Kurt Shafer Bridge, which sits at the confluence of the Bujuku and Mubuku Rivers. This crossing offers your first stunning glimpse of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke.

As you continue the trek, the trail grows more challenging as you navigate slippery, moss-covered rocks through the bamboo forest. Afterwards, traverse the tiring bog and the zone of giant heather and lobelia to reach John Matte Hut. Finally, end your day with dinner and an overnight stay at the John Matte hut.

Day 4: John Matte Hut – Bujuku hut (3962M ASL)

From here, the trail descends to cross the Bujuku River, leading into the soggy Lower Bigo Bog. Wellies are a must here, so get ready for stunning views of Lake Bujuku, Mount Stanley and Mount Baker. In the valley beneath Mount Baker and Mount Speke is Bujuku hut. Dinner and overnight at Bujuku Hut.

Day 5: Bujuku Hut – Elena Hut (4541M ASL)

Leaving early, brace yourself for more bogs and steep slopes, with ladders offering epic views. Continue to Elena’s hut, where you’ll rest for the night. Dinner and overnight at Elena’s hut.

Day 6; Elena Hut – Margherita Peak (5109M ASL)

From Elena hut ascend to Margherita peak or head to Lake Kitandara. If you opt for Margherita, prepare for a challenging pre-dawn climb over glaciers, icy rocks, and fierce winds, about 4-5 hrs to the summit. Rejoice, enjoy the views and photos before descending back to Elena for lunch. Then descend to Scott Elliot Pass, with stunning views of Lake Bujuku and Mount Speke—dinner and overnight at Kitandara hut.

Day 7; Kitandara – Guy Yeoman (3621M ASL)

From Kitandara, embark on a thrilling ascent to Fresh Field Pass (4282m), with breathtaking views of the Congo landscape and Mount Stanley. Here, the journey ends at Guy Yeoman camp for the night, with dinner at Guy Yeoman Hut.

Day 8: Guy Yeoman – Nyabitaba (2651M ASL) & Descend To Nyakalengija (1600M ASL). 

Today marks the final descent! early start, conquer the 7-8 hr trek from Guy Yeoman down through Kichuchu cliffs. Cross the Mubuku River twice amid muddy conditions, push onward to Nyabitaba for lunch, then proceed to Nyakalengija for dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Transfer To Entebbe or Kampala.

After breakfast, transfer back to Entebbe, and have lunch in Mbabara City, continue to Entebbe, arriving in the evening for your flight back home.
