8 Days Hiking Mt Rwenzori “Mountains of the Moon”
8 Days Hiking Mt Rwenzori hike highlights mountain climbing as the most prominent activity. The Park features heavily snowcapped peaks that create a spectacular landscape. You will find three major peaks within the Rwenzori ranges: Margherita (5,109m) on Mount Stanley, Vittorio Emanuele (4,889m) on Mount Speke, and Edward (4,842m) on Mount Baker. Please note that only experienced mountaineers should attempt these high peaks
You should not forget the variety of mammals on the mountain slopes, the waterfalls, hot springs, blue cirque lakes, snow-clad peaks, and diverse vegetation. The Park also harbours 217 bird species, 9 reptile species, 6 amphibian species, elephants, chimps, leopards, buffaloes, cultural heritage for neighbouring communities, 18 sacred sites identified and preserved as sacred areas, and so much more.
DAY 1: Nyabitaba camp 2650m
From Nyakalengija, the starting point, you will hike for three to four hours through thick tropical forest and climb a steep ridge with fern fields to reach the camp. We located the camp within a dense forest canopy mixed with podocarpus trees.
Along the way, you can view various bird species, black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and butterflies. You may also catch a rare glimpse of duikers and mountain elephants.
DAY 2: John mate camp 3380m
The walk from Nyabitaba to John Matte takes six to seven hours. The trail leads you through bamboo and heather-moss forests up to the alpine zone, where giant lobelias and groundsels surround the camp.
While heather trees dominate this zone, you will also find species like St. John’s wort and rapanea. At night, you may spot or hear rock hyraxes and find mountain leopard footprints before enjoying dinner and your overnight stay.
DAY 3: Bujuku camp 3977m
We located Bujuku Camp at the foot of Mount Stanley, Mount Baker, and Mount Speke. From the camp, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the glaciers and Lake Bujuku at close range.
This hike will take 4 to 5 hours. Most peak climbers prefer Bujuku as a resting place for acclimatisation. From here, you can easily climb mountain Speke and back on the same day.
DAY 4: Elena camp 4541m
We established Elena Camp at the snow line as the starting point for the twin peaks of Mount Stanley—Margherita (5,109m) and Alexandra. On this day, we ensure you reach the main peaks before embarking on the three- to four-hour walk to Kitandara.
DAY 5: Kitandara lakes camp 4027m
The trek from Elena to Kitandara Lakes Camp takes two to four hours, while the route from Bujuku to Kitandara takes five to seven hours. Scenic groundsels, lobelias, and St. John’s wort surround the camp. From this location, you can view the beautiful upper and lower Kitandara lakes and admire the Elena glaciers. The journey to Guy Yeoman Camp will then take six to seven hours.
DAY 6: Guy yeoman 3450m
An early morning, bursting climb leads you to the Fresh Field Pass at 4,280m, where you can view the Edward glaciers on Mt. Baker, Luigi di Savoia, and the Kitandara lakes. As you descend to Guy Yeoman camp, located within the scenic Mubuku River valley, you will enjoy amazing attractions including the Bujongolo and Kendahi rock shelters and the Kabamba waterfalls. The final descent to Nyabitaba will take four to five hours.
Day 7: Nyabitaba to Nyakalengija
From Guy Yeoman Camp, it is about 4 to 5 hours descent through the Bamboo Zones to reach your second glimpse of Nyabitaba, to have a night or just a brief cup of coffee, and thereafter onward to Nakalengiya for another 3 to 4 hours descent to finish your mountain trek.
