Gorilla, Chimpanzee, and Wildlife in Rwanda

To ensure the gorillas’ safety, visitors must follow strict rules, such as maintaining a distance of 7 meters and avoiding flash photography. Furthermore, participants must be at least 15 years old to join these treks.
Chimpanzee Tracking
Furthermore, travellers primarily find Rwanda’s chimpanzees within the ancient montane rainforests of the southwest. Specifically, Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa’s oldest rainforests, is home to over 400 chimpanzees. In addition to this primary location, the newly established Gishwati-Mukura National Park also supports a small chimpanzee population.
Because chimpanzees move quickly through the canopy, these tracking experiences start early—around 5:00 AM—and often demand significant physical effort from visitors. Despite the challenge, the permit costs roughly $150 USD, making it a more accessible alternative to gorilla trekking.

Beyond the great apes, Rwanda offers a diverse range of safari and primate experiences that cater to every wildlife enthusiast. For instance, Akagera National Park serves as Rwanda’s only savannah destination where visitors can spot the “Big Five”: lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos.
Furthermore, the country is home to rare primates such as golden monkeys, which live exclusively in the Virunga Mountains and Volcanoes National Park. Meanwhile, Nyungwe National Park protects 13 different primate species, including massive troops of Angolan colobus monkeys.
