5 animals that don’t drink water throughout their lives 👇🏾
Have you ever imagined life without water? Interestingly, several animals never drink water. These 5 animals never drink water, and they live in different conditions and survive on different diets. Here are five animals that do not drink water at all:
1. Mealworms
Mealworms do not drink water, relying instead on a specialised cryptonephridial system attached to the kidney to absorb the last drops of moisture from their food. This system allows them to stay hydrated throughout their life cycle as they develop from eggs to larvae, pupae, and finally beetles.
2. Sand gazelles
Sand gazelles do not drink water. They love open sand, and they can live without water. The gazelles have adapted to the hostile surroundings. They can slow their heart rate and breathe more slowly.
3. Freshwater fish
This fish is saltier than the surrounding water. Water normally enters the fish by osmosis and passively through its stomach, gills, and skin. The fish eliminates the excess water by peeing repeatedly. The specialised cells help remove excess salt from the urine.
4. Frogs
Did you know that frogs never swallow water? Instead, these animals have highly specialised, permeable skin that lets moisture enter their bodies directly. In fact, they use this unique skin for both breathing and drinking. They normally absorb all the moisture they need from their environment through their skin rather than using their mouths.
5. Tiger salamanders
To wind up our list, these salamanders do not use their mouths to drink water; instead, they absorb moisture through their semi-permeable skin. Consequently, never subject these animals to chlorine, as it can cause serious dehydration or skin damage.
